Flights out of Heathrow to be cut by a fifth during London Olympics 2012

Flights in and out of Heathrow will be cut by up to a fifth during the Olympics to try and prevent overcrowding.

All airports across the South East will be regulated and restrictions imposed to ensure Heathrow can cope with the 500,000 international visitors expected during the London 2012 Olympics.

Ministers concerned with the prospect of long delays and passenger complaints commissioned a task force of experts to draw up plans and they have come up with a series of temporary rules that will be imposed on airports across the South East between July 21 and August 15, The Times reported

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has approved temporary changes to controlled airspace during the Olympics 2012

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has approved temporary changes to controlled airspace in areas to the South West, South East and North East of the busy London Terminal Control Area during the London 2012 Olympics when there is expected to be a significant amount of additional air traffic movements. The changes announced today will help ensure the safety of all airspace users during the Olympic period from 16 July to 15 August 2012.

The air traffic control service providers, NATS, and Stobart Air, had jointly requested the use of Temporary Controlled Airspace (CAS (T)) at key locations to better cope with the increased movements mainly from business jets. In addition, Manston Airport has also requested CAS (T) in the vicinity of Manston which has also been approved. The CAA said the decision to approve the requests would safely allow for additional capacity for London 2012 with the minimum possible disruption to General Aviation users.

The NATS/Stobart Air and Manston requests followed an extensive consultation with key aviation stakeholders. The use of CAS (T) is a temporary air traffic control operational change and should not to be confused with the already announced security restrictions being put in place by the Government over much of London and the Home Counties during the Olympic Games.

The CAA said it will be publishing the reasoning behind its decision to accept the CAS (T) request in November 2011. Full operational details of the changes will appear in an official Aeronautical Information Publication Supplement in Spring 2012. On 16 August 2012, the CAS (T) will be completely withdrawn.

Border Agency strike: airport update

Although passengers arriving into the UK on international flights today can expect delays when passing through border control due to strike action by border agency staff, the airports appear to be operating normally at present and contingency plans appear to be working.

According to the twitter accounts of many of the UK airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick, it’s business as normal, so far so go, although queues could build up as the day progresses.

If you are arriving into the UK today it is advisable to:

Use e-Passport gates where available
Have travel documents, including passports, ready
Fully complete landing cards
Stay in family groups.

Civil servants deployed to cover UK borders during strike action

The largest coordinated industrial action will see up to 3 million workers take strike action next Wednesday, 30 November 2011.

Among strikers will be UK Border Agency staff who look after passport control and immigration at all the UK’s airports and ports.

In order to alleviate chaos at the UK’s airports, the Government is to transfer civil servants from Whitehall to man the UK’s borders, checking passports of EU travellers and also man e-passport gates where passengers use their biometric passports.

A UKBA spokesman told the BBC: “The security of the UK border remains our top priority and it is absolutely right we explore all options to ensure we minimise any disruption caused by planned union action.”

Tips for passengers arriving in the UK on 30 November:

Have passports and travel documents to hand
Use e-passport gates if at all possible

Naples Airport Reopens Runway

The Naples Airport Authority reopened Runway 5/23 late last week after paving the safety areas at both ends of the airport’s primary runway. The runway was closed since July 25, but the project was completed a few days ahead of schedule and under budget, the authority said. The safety areas provide more room for aborted takeoffs and other emergencies and extends the runway’s declared takeoff distance from 5,000 to 5,800 feet. The landing distance remains 5,000 feet.

G650 Receives Provisional Type Certificate

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.'s G650 has received its provisional type certificate (PTC) from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Provisional certification clears the way for the company to begin interior completions of the jet in preparation for customer deliveries in the second quarter of 2012, as originally planned.

“We are pursuing a two-step certification approach to keep us on track for our planned deliveries in the second quarter of 2012,” said Larry Flynn, president, Gulfstream. “With the PTC in hand, our plan is to move production aircraft into final phase manufacturing to ensure customer deliveries in the second quarter of 2012.”

PTCs have been common in general aviation programmes over the past 15 years. Both the Gulfstream V and the Gulfstream G550 were issued PTCs before receiving full certification.

The four G650 aircraft in the flight-test programme have flown more than 2,225 hours during more than 675 flights

New airport bill 'puts passengers first'

The draft Civil Aviation Bill will replace the current economic regulation duties of the aviation regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), with a single primary duty to promote the interests of passengers.

The CAA will be given more flexibility to set performance measures at major airports, encourage investment in improvements and provide passengers and other airport users with more information about airline and airport performance.

The CAA will be given powers to impose a range of penalties for breaching licence conditions - with fines of up to 10% of an airport's annual turnover.

New airport legislation promising to put passengers' needs first was published today by the Government.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport Servisair staff on strike

Ground staff at Liverpool John Lennon Airport have staged a two-hour strike in a row over jobs.

The Servisair workers walked out from 05:00 GMT until 07:00 GMT and are due to hold another two-hour stoppage at 19:15 GMT.

The GMB said the action was in protest at plans for 47 compulsory redundancies at Servisair, which deals with airlines including Ryanair, Easyjet and FlyBe.

The company has promised there will be no disruption to flights.

A single two-hour strike is also planned for Sunday at 16:00 GMT followed by two more strikes on 28 November.

New CEO for London City Airport

London City Airport has announced the appointment of Declan Collier as its new Chief Executive.

Mr Collier will replace the current CEO, Richard Gooding OBE, in early 2012. Richard Gooding OBE has been CEO for the past 15 years and will join the Board as a non-executive director.
Declan Collier is currently CEO of the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

Speaking about Mr Collier’s appointment, Roy Griffins, Chairman of London City Airport said, “We are delighted to have secured as our new CEO somebody of Declan Collier’s calibre and experience,”

Strike set to close Croatia's main airport Friday

Croatia's main airport in the capital Zagreb is likely to be seriously disrupted on Friday by an airport employees' strike.

Unions called the stoppage for Friday (1000-1500 GMT) after the management rejected amendments to the collective agreement which the unions say would protect the workers' rights if the airport was concessioned to a new operator.

Croatia's transport ministry launched an international tender this year for the construction of a second terminal at Zagreb airport and a 30-year concession for operating both terminals.

Zagreb airport is a major hub for holidaymakers heading for the Adriatic coast.

The airport management said on Thursday it could not accept the unions' demands as they would require "unreasonably wide extensions of the rights they enjoy now".

Analysts say Croatia's rigid labour legislation deters many investors who regard the next European Union member as a potentially appealing market. Croatia completed EU entry talks in June and is expected to join the bloc in July 2013.

A union statement said they were prepared to stage another strike on Monday, which would last the whole day. As a last resort, an open-ended strike would start on November 28.

The deadline for the final round of bidding in the tender expires on November 21. Croatia received 10 foreign bids in the first round and, according to unofficial sources, six made it to the second round. The value of the investment is estimated at some 190 million euros.

Some 2.2 million passengers pass through Zagreb airport annually and the goal is to increase this to around 5 million.

Falcon 7X To Get OnAir Cabin Phone System

On Air is working on a supplementary type certificate for the Dassault Falcon 7X, which will be the first purpose-built business jet to receive the on-board cell phone service specialist’s system. So far, the system had been installed only in “bizliners,” such as Boeing BBJs or Airbus ACJs. OnAir allows passengers to use their phone in flight just as they would on the ground, at affordable cost.

For the passenger, “nothing changes, and that changes everything,” said OnAir’s head of VIP, corporate and governmental aircraft David Bony. This is different from using a satellite telephone, he pointed out. The passenger can also receive calls on his or her personal cell phone while flying and thus can use the contact directory that it contains.

The first Falcon 7X to receive the system will be one operated by Geneva-based operator, According to Raphael Salamanca, the operator’s head of sales, OnAir’s service will be available in the Operator's aircraft from March next year.

Any authorized Falcon service center should be able to retrofit a 7X with the new equipment.

The package, which costs close to $250,000 (not including installation man-hours), has been installed aboard about 15 bizliners, in addition to airliners operated by Emirates and other carriers.

The passenger pays for the in-flight calls as extra lines on his regular telephone bill. Per-minute cost ranges from $4 to $5.60, Bony said. The system accommodates up to 14 simultaneous calls.

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, prime minister and vice president of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, officially opened the Dubai Air Show 2011 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of the Royal Pavilion yesterday. Afterward he led a royal delegation on a tour of the static display and exhibitor stands.

Sheikh Mohammed’s background as the UAE’s first minister of defense and his enthusiasm for innovative aircraft were both evident in his choice of stops during the tour. He was accompanied by Alison Weller, managing director of show organizer F&E Aerospace.

Flights to be Rescheduled During Dubai Air Show 2011

Flights will be rescheduled and airspace closed as part of safety measures during the Dubai Airshow, which starts on Sunday.

The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority will close the airspace between 2.15 and 5.15pm on each day of the show, which runs until next Thursday at the Airport Expo.

Each day 148 flights will be rescheduled through Dubai International Airport, comprising 68 arrivals and 80 departures.

"During the Dubai Airshow temporary flight restrictions will be put into effect to ensure that nothing enters the radius of airspace needed for the show," Mohammad Ahli, Director General of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, told Gulf News.
